Sprekend Nederland is een portret van Nederland aan de hand van toespraken op bruiloften, partijen, begrafenissen, openbare manifestaties, politieke bijeenkomsten en protestmarsen. Van een volkskroeg tot het Koninklijk Paleis en van het kampioensfeest van Feyenoord tot de dood van een 100-jarige wordt de tijdgeest van nu gevangen. De film laat zien hoe Nederland haar geluk viert en tradities voortzet, maar ook hoe ons land verdeeld is in allerlei clubjes en subculturen. Een land dat ondanks het geluk nog steeds moet wennen aan de nieuwkomers.
De film opent met de naturalisatieceremonie van nieuwe Nederlanders die hun paspoort krijgen en hun trouw aan de Nederlandse grondwet beloven. En eindigt met de diploma-uitreiking van middelbare scholieren op weg naar een nieuw fase in hun leven. Daartussen in is er een caleidoscoop aan scenes die op een soms ontroerende manier de kijker de vraag voorhouden: in wat voor land woon ik eigenlijk?De film is een coproductie van KV Films en Human en is tot stand gekomen met ondersteuning van het Nederlands Filmfonds en het CoBO fonds, in het kader van Teledoc.

Using speeches at weddings and parties, but also at protest marches and other forms of public gatherings, Sprekend Nederland paints a portrait of the Netherlands which captures the zeitgeist of today. The film reveals a multicultural country which is still coming to terms with its multicultural reality: a country that feels threatened by the arrival of newcomers. So the question is: what are we actually frightened of? Is it the fear of losing our own happiness, the fear of the unknown?
We see a country divided into different subcultures, each seemingly preaching - both literally and metaphorically - to their own constituency. Inside their subcultures, everyone feels safe and united, but at the same time to the exclusion of others. The film opens with a naturalisation ceremony for new Dutch citizens being issued with their passports. It ends with a graduation ceremony for school leavers on the threshold of a new phase in their lives. In between, there is a kaleidoscope of scenes - sometimes distressing, at other times moving - which confront the viewer with the question: do I really want to live in this country.
